Magical Mistakes - Supermoon Crashed featuring Mutual Benefit

Erik Luebs released his Special Friends EP today, and in doing so has unpigeon-holed himself from any constraints the word “producer” might have put on him. This EP is a collection of collaborations and remixes with people like Jordan Lee from Mutual Benefit, Lady Lazarus, and more.
Supermoon Crashed surprisingly melds these two totally different forms of making music. Erik’s thoughtful electronic production is married perfectly with Jordan’s more naturalistic instrumentation and swooning croon. I’m a fan of anything Magical Mistakes touches, but it’s nice to see him expanding his territory and collaborating with some other great artists.
Seiho is a Japanese electronic artist, who just released a brand new full-length on Japanese-based label Day Tripper Records. There’s a growing, and close knit community of really talented electronic producers in Japan, and they are deservedly gaining some ground. I was pointed to Seiho by one of my favorite Japan-based (by way of California) artists, Magical Mistakes.
Seiho’s production is impressive, and it’s evident he has some serious know how. Which is why it isn’t surprising to find that he has formal training in Jazz. I never cease to be amazed at how different forms of music can inform one another. You can stream the two tracks from Mercury below, and order the album here.

Magical Mistakes - Really Pretty Rainy Day

There’s always been something cutting about the music of Erik Luebs. Even the duality in his name, Magical Mistakes, suggests an appeal to more than just one part of your being. It’s music for the train, when you know what your leaving behind, but you’re not a hundred percent sure about where you’re headed.
This track is a part of a compilation for INNIT (tumblr), a Japanese based electronic music community just doing it’s part to spread good music where it can. Go listen to the compilation in whole here. You won’t regret it.
Parallax - a mix by smoke don’t smoke
The past couple months have flown by. Trying to maintain a super cooperate job, while attempting to keep up with the world of music, and really just life in general. It’s had me thinking whether I’m even in the right spot at all. Whether I’d be better off doing something else? Then again, maybe it’s all just parallax. The apparent displacement of an object, all due to the position in which the object is seen. Maybe from another perspective I’m right where I should be.
Bless the five who contributed exclusive tracks to this mix. Chrome Sparks, Sun Glitters, Moon Bounce, Giraffage, and Magical Mistakes. These five have been some of the most impressive producers I’ve had the pleasure of listening to this year. I’m overwhelmed that they were able to help make this mix what it is, and I’m so excited to see what they’ve still yet to make.

Magical Mistakes = Fetishization

Erik Luebs used to live in Southern California, but has since began the great wander that humans sometimes seems to do. That point where you just can’t stay in the same place anymore, no matter how good or bad that place might be. It’s not even about the place in the end, it’s about you. It’s about that level of self-knowledge that you know you don’t have, and can’t have, if you don’t leave, and just wander.
He resides in Japan as of now, and makes music as Magical Mistakes. His new album appropriately named Dislocation is out June 7. Check out the track above, and another one off the new album over at my buddy Ears of the Beholder (that one in Japanese, as Luebs is sometimes prone to do).
